What to do & Where to go this Easter?

For many Nigerians, the Easter period marks a time of reflection, rest and celebration with family and friends. In Lagos, there is always a sense of both calm and chaos; although the roads are no longer full of traffic, music and laughter can be heard all across the city. This year is no exception, and Jovago has created a mini-guide to the upcoming Easter weekend to make sure that you and your loved ones make the most of the time together!

To do:

Lagos Easter Water Regatta
For a fun and cultural afternoon, we’d highly recommend a look at the Lagos Water Regatta on Easter Sunday. The Regatta is a cultural festival of indigenous communities and is put together to showcase what the various coastal communities have to offer in terms of water sport and cultural beauty. The event usually has a 50,000 strong turnout on the day, and the beautiful waterfront of Lagos Island seems like the perfect place to kick back for the afternoon.

The Lagos Carnival
The Lagos Carnival is an enormously popular event every year and this year promises to be even bigger and better. Starting on Easter Monday at 10am, you can either walk with the bands from Awolowo Road, Ikoyi to Tafawa Balewa Square or go directly to the square. Let yourself be dazzled by the colourful costumes and music, and bust out your best dance moves with the rest of the crowd. It’s guaranteed to have a great party atmosphere that’s perfect to share with friends.

To eat:

Senses Restaurant - Cascade Resort
For those in search of a slice of luxury this Easter weekend, look no further than Senses Restaurant within the Cascade Resort in Lagos. Star chef Luís Batalha works meticulously with his first-class team to deliver impeccable dishes that are a feast for the eyes and the stomach! This spectacular restaurant would make the perfect family meal this Easter, but make your reservations as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Ocean Basket Seafood Restaurant
If you are looking for something a little different, then Ocean Basket is a great destination on Victoria Island for a taste of the sea with friends and family. The menu offers a large range of platters to share or individual dishes, and is highly praised for the freshness of their ingredients. Upstairs is usually a little bit quieter, so it’s the ideal location for an easy-going weekend lunch.

To stay:
Best Western The Island

The Best Western The Island Hotel is a beautiful oceanfront hotel located in Victoria Island, Lagos and ideal for both business and leisure travellers. The Hotel would be the perfect place to spend your Easter break with your family as it features suites, ocean view rooms, free parking, high speed internet and airport shuttle services.

Morning Side Suites

Morning Side Suites is a charming boutique hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. With a nice restaurant, swimming pool, bar, a lounge and a fitness room, this hotel would be the perfect home away from home this Easter.

These hotels and many more are available to book online at Jovago.com.ng - we wish you all a happy and peaceful Easter break.

Photo of the Day: Exquisite Wedding IV

Wedding invitations are now getting creative in all manner of ways like the one in this picture which I got from my brother in-law. It was for a high profile wedding which included celebrities of all sorts from Political to entertainment. Funke Akindele was the MC of the event and it was all strictly by invitation.

The IV came in a beautiful casing like the one used to hold exquisite necklaces. The wedding was between the daughter of a former Oga of Globacom; one of Mike Adenuga's right hand men and some guy from an equally wealthy family. (Sounds like arrangee wedding).

Na wah oh...see money in action....my own wedding IV na pali we take do am. This one na glass!

Miami & Victoria Island: A Tale of Two Doomed Cities?

Miami
I came across this article on a forecast by scientists on the future of Miami at the end of the century. It’s a future that reads like a apocalyptic scenario unfolding. According to scientists, Miami is doomed due to the land’s flat topography and porous rocks which make it susceptible to rising sea levels. Its reported that with just three feet rise in sea level, more than a third of South Florida would vanish.

I looked at the cityscape of Florida and how it sat at the edge of the sea and shivered as it reminded me of a similar looking topography in Nigeria – Victoria Island.

A few years back, Victoria Island experienced ocean surges that washed past the famous Bar Beach and washed onto the streets. Alarm was raised and engineers were hired to construct protective blockades against the ocean’s raging surge.

But would the Island still be that secure by the end of the decade?

Victoria Island
Despite this there’s a lot of land filling going on along the coasts creating more land space for more buildings to spring up. I’ve seen how terrible flooding takes place in places like Lekki which is predominantly land filled space. I wonder what it will look like in the next ten years.

The famous Eko Atlantic project which involves massive land filling at the banks of the sea to create space for a super mega city even scares me the most. It looks too much like a major disaster waiting to happen.  With the flooding disasters of the last two years, the whole project doesn’t seem the least bit safe in any way.

What's left of V.I's Bar Beach today.

Proposed Eko Atlantic City
Jeff Goodell, an environment writer wrote this chilling bit about Miami in the Rolling Stones Online Magazine:

When it rains in Miami, it’s spooky. Blue sky vanishes and suddenly water is everywhere, pooling in streets, flooding parking lots, turning intersections into submarine crossings. Even for a nonbeliever like me, it feels biblical, as if God were punishing the good citizens of Miami Beach for spending too much time on the dance floor. At Alton Road and 10th Street, we watched a woman in a Toyota stall at a traffic light as water rose up to the doors. A man waded out to help her, water up to his knees. This flooding has gotten worse with each passing year, happening not only after torrential rainstorms but during high tides, too, when rising sea water backs up through the city’s antiquated drainage system.

Wanless, 71, who drives an SUV that is littered with research equipment, notebooks and mud, shook his head with pity. “This is what global warming looks like,” he explained. “If you live in South Florida and you’re not building a boat, you’re not facing reality.”

Goodell’s description is very similar to the scenarios experienced on the streets of Victoria Island. We saw how the terrible floods of last year made people resort to the use of boats as cars submerged and homes got flooded. It was a harrowing experience.

And it has been reported that more heavy rains and floods are to be expected.

Still, more landfill projects keep springing up, big investments go into real estate in these seeming endangered areas.  Must we end up learning from a disastrous experience when we could prevent it?

How long will we close our eyes and court with this danger?

Today Means Something to Me...

It's the day I was born! It's my birthday today!

Me at 1 year old.

Happy Birthday and many happy returns to an awesome me!

What? you don't think I'm awesome? well some people think I am...Almighty God and my sweet family, nuclear and partially extended.

A.Y.

People say A.Y and I bear striking resemblance as babies.
Is it true?

Tribute to My Little Genius [Photos]

You're probably wondering what this post is all about and for most who are not familiar with the face of the little man in the photo, that's A.Y. Yes, that's my little dude whom I call 'The Little Genius', 'Okunrin Meta', 'Ekun Wewe' and 'Baba Kekere'. I gave him these knicknames for certain reasons.

I call him 'Little Genius' because he's fond of finding solutions to problems by himself; he dislikes being seen as helpless. He even refused to be helped when he tried taking his first steps.

I call him 'Okunrin Meta' (Three times a man) or 'Ekun Wewe' (Small Lion) because he's got guts, does what his sister can't dare, loves to explore everything and takes being serious seriously.

I call him 'Baba Kekere' because he's got this baby swag which makes him look 'elderly' when he walks. When he puts on native its further amplified! One of our friends saw him walking that way and said he walks like a 'Landlord'. I initially wondered if landlords had a certain swag but later understood that he was referring to the way he walks - like someone with power and wisdom.

Today is a special day because it marks the day A.Y was born and I'm so proud to be a Dad to the little dude. He has such an independent mind like mine, a load of expressions like his granddad and is said to strut like his great-granddad.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY A.Y.!

MANY BLESSED RETURNS AS YOU STRIKE TWO YEARS OLD!

I've Got something to say this Easter

Yeah...I believe in Jesus and not easter bunnies.
Have an awesome Easter holiday and thank you all for visiting this blog.
Please drop a comment of greeting in return...it's highly appreciated!

Wardrobe Awkwardness at the AMVCA [Photos]

The first edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards has come and gone and it had its ups and downs as usual of any event on its first outing. I never got a glimpse of the red carpet showcase. I’m usually not interested in watching people display what they are wearing while answering cliché and boring questions.

The ceremony was in full gear by the time I got to start viewing it. Trust me to always look for the FAILS about the event. Apart from the tackiness of the auditorium which looked like a poorly lit event hall, outfits of some of the celebrities got me wondering what were they thinking when they got into those clothes. There were many outfits that warranted being jibed at, like Genevieve's boob popper but I won't dwell on those because they were only for a moment to be seen.

I wish I had started snapping pictures earlier when I noticed about two or three of the women who came on stage at different times, wore gowns that had trailing pieces behind as long as that of a wedding gown. One of them had to have a guy help her carry the trailing piece along as they both ascended the stage.  I kept asking, what was the point? I remember one of them was in the crew behind the production of the movie ‘The Mirror Boy’.

Jim Iyke looking like a student in his shorts.

Then Jim Iyke came on stage on his own cue wearing knickers…abi na shorts, Daring guy…at least he made me laugh. It was a departure from looking suave and 'sesky'; he just looked plain ridiculous.
Well, at least we only saw them for the moment. But we saw the hostess most of the time.

And what was she wearing?

Flaunting her legs or just playing safe in that weird gown?

A ridiculous outfit that looked like an unfinished project…it was something that looked like three quarters of a gown and one-quarter of a mini-skirt. And the hostess (can’t recall her name but I know she’s not Nigerian) had to maintain this awkward standing position which evidently revealed that she was not 100% comfortable in the outfit. The dress looked so ‘unsafe’ I felt for her. Any small miscalculation or wardrobe malfunction and we’d probably end up seeing everything she wore underneath.

Even I.K., her male co-host seemed a bit concerned about anything going wrong with the outfit.  She survived, but she was some ridiculous spectacle on that stage. I wonder if she at some time got cramps in her legs standing like that most of the time.

The Pointless 1 Year Old Birthday Party

Every child’s one year old party is significant for the fact that it is the child’s first birthday celebration. In Nigeria however, many parents are in the habit of making this funny and unwise decision to throw a big party for their one year old.

Yes. I said unwise.

All I have ever observed at one year old birthday parties are just a waste of time, energy, money and unnecessary frustration in trying to make things look perfect.

I once took my daughter a couple of years back to a one year old’s birthday party. There were canopies and chairs arranged outside; a DJ was blasting music that was unfit for kids (but wetin parents wey dey there sabi? It’s just music abi?) and lots of food and drink was being served and wasted; most of which were being consumed by adults, the kids (who were way older than the celebrant) did much of the food wasting. Then they hit the dance floor for games and fooling around with the party clown/M.C.

And where was the celebrant?

The little guy was fast asleep in his mother’s room!

When it came to cutting the cake and snapping photographs, the little fella just screamed and bawled all over the place; as far as he was concerned as a baby, his peace was being destroyed by all the loud music, cheering and fun. All he needed to do was to sleep, wake up later in the day to eat and eventually crap his diapers. The party was just plain meaningless chaos that robbed him of his baby peace.

Eventually they had to postpone the cake cutting and photos. All the photos they ever took had him with an unhappy and nasty expression on his face. Meanwhile the party continued and at the end of the day I asked the question: And what has been achieved with all this waste of money?

This past Sunday, I witnessed another one of these pointless one year old parties next door to where I live  on almost exactly in the same fashion as the first one I just explained above. We never even saw the celebrant. Seven to ten year olds were just busy having fun and dancing as usual to music that’s inappropriate for children. To one corner, some male adults sat drinking different kinds of alcohol and engaging in beer parlour or football gist. Other adults sat flanking the kids, eating food and waiting for the party to end so that they could take their children home.

The party happening next door to me.

And the celebrant, an innocent one year old who had no foggy idea of what the hell was going on was nowhere to be found. I presumed he was probably asleep somewhere too. (One year olds don’t joke with their sleep!).

I remember when little Timi struck one, we celebrated it for her in-house with food, drinks, snacks, cake and just a few friends, and we took photos with her. Our Pastor came around and prayed for her, and we had fun playing with her till she decided to go to sleep.

When A.Y struck one, we did the same and got a lot of good stuff for him to eat (because he loves to eat). Family and friends came around to see him and take pictures with him till he started protesting the need to nap.

We never started doing the party thingy until Timi got into school at 2 years. At this point, we just got variety snacks, drinks, take-away goodies and cake for the party celebration in her class. Timi by now knew what was going on and understood that she was being celebrated. We were aware that we made her day and she beamed all day about it.

Timi during her one year old birthday.

If I had done a big noisy party at one year old for her, she probably would have been terrified and confused.
This is my take on one year old birthday parties. I don’t think it’s a good idea to throw a big party for a one year old. For a 3 year old and upwards it’s okay but for the little one year old fella or lady who’s still trying to understand what the heck is going on in the world around him, it’s a sheer waste of money, energy and time.

When Bankers Drop Like Flies

There was a time when being a banker was the ultimate job that paid the best; as a banker you had arrived, you were the big boy/girl and you gathered respect in social circles. I remember those days when I’d just finished my youth service, I went for many interviews and tests each time a bank put up a vacancy. At a time during my youth service which took place in Imo State, I had to travel to IMT, Enugu, to take a test for a job consideration in one of the topmost banks.

I got there and was utterly intimidated and discouraged.

Thousands and thousands of youth corp members and job seekers flooded the place; some of the job seekers already had multiple working experiences thereby sliming chances for the greenhorns like me. The test held all over the nation in different centres across different states…and I got to hear that the bank needed just 60 people to hire.

Fast forward to today.

Working in a bank now seems like a last resort to survival in these harsh times when the economy is not smiling on corporations. To make matters worse, bankers started dropping like flies under the pressure of work at the time when the recession freshly hit. Then when the consolidation took place it seemed to worsen further.

Caleb Ogbonnaya

Now it’s happening again and Banker’s are dropping dead again. Access Bank seems to be in the wake of this. With all the scandals and controversy surrounding the bank on its acquisition of Intercontinental Bank amongst other things, the issue of its staff dying on the Job should call for some sort of intervention.
Just yesterday, an Access Bank staff, Caleb Ogbonnaya of E-Banking at Oyin Jolayemi Branch at Victoria Island slumped and died before he could make it to the hospital.

Solabomi Olugbemi

This incident happened just barely two weeks after a female staff Solabomi Olugbemi of Retail Business Unit , Simbiat Abiola branch collapsed and died due to high blood pressure.
Also, with the circulating speculation that 60% of Access Bank are highly hypertensive and run the risk of heart attack in their prime, I believe there’s need to sound an alarm.

I don’t envy bankers anymore, not with the crazy unrealistic deadlines imposed upon them by their superiors. Every time I meet with friends who are bankers (especially in the marketing field), I feel for them.
I have a friend who works in a bank and I see the signs on him – he has started growing white all over the place in his hair, moustache and beard; I’ve heard him talk about the nasty crazy deadlines and how its only God’s grace that’s sustaining him. All I can do is just pray for him and others that I know.

Let's however not fail to note that there are survivors…and these are the ones naturally wired for the job but how many of such do you find in these times where people prefer to pursue money rather than their passion?

I’m so glad I never passed those banking tests!

Oshiomole Dances Etighi on stage with Chuddy K

The man celebrates victory in style. I hope he wasn't made to go crazy sha like Chuddy K's senseless song says oh!

So they're arresting Pastors now?

The last thing I ever expected to hear on the news is another senseless violation of human rights.
Whenever did the government start censoring Pastors from making certain pronouncements on the pulpit?
I thought we were past dictatorial eras and were now beginning to exercise a bit of sense in the way we go about things in this country now.

Pastor Bakare
Source

Why did the Nigeria's Secret Police (SSS) have to summon Pastor Tunde Bakare (Latter Rain Assembly) over a Sunday Sermon in which he asked the President to resign? Na the first time person dey ask am to resign? What is so wrong in that? Then they go ahead and tell him not to preach such sermons again. Haba! So we should stop recieving wake up calls again? People have lost faith in GEJ and will glady recieve his resignation so what's all the fuss about? So whom dem go pursue next? Bishop Oyedepo? (Because I know he has also 'advised' the government a number of times).

Unless, there's another story to it, our government is beginning to look so insecure.Wetin dem dey hide? Somebody better own up before the shit hits the fan in multiple bouts!

Princess & Saka - Comedic Chemistry

About Two weeks ago, I was on set with the crew to shoot the 12th installment of a promo commercial series for Etisalat. We had finished with the first part of the shoot and were taking a break while the crew packed before we headed for the next location. During that period I got gisting with the actors of the commercial; Princess and Hafiz Oyetoro (Saka). We discussed at random touching topics like Princess' scary and hilarious experience with arm robbers to Saka's personal experiences as an actor.

Saka & Princess in action

The sound man attaches a mic on Saka before the shoot.

It was rather interesting to learn from Saka, the reason why he got married late.
'Women never took me serious. They always felt I was joking!' he told me. I wasn't surprised. Mr. Oyetoro a.k.a Saka had this natural funny look that could make you laugh by just looking at him. But in the few moments I spent chatting with him, I was able to see his serious side. The man was an easy-going and humble gentleman at heart. It was a pleasure working with him.

The comedians yabbing each other on set

Saka rehearses his lines at the second location

Saka & Princess: a perfect comedic chemistry

Princess on the other was a gist machine. She had so much gist that livened everybody up on the set, making us laugh again and again. The climax was when both Saka and Princess were on set together; the two had the comedic chemistry that actually became another show to watch as they playful 'yabbed' each other while warming up for the shoot.

When we were casting for these series last year April, we were at loggerheads over who would match Saka's comedic antics. Initially Helen Paul was suggested but we kicked against using her because she had become known for 'small pikin' roles and that could backfire.

Then my creative director got an eureka an suggested Princess.

The rest is history and we are sure glad we made the perfect choice. The series have become a hit, some people have started refering to the episodes as 'season 1, 2' etc.

The shoot took the whole day. I managed to capture some of it on camera. I edited it and loaded it on Youtube. You can view it below.

Photo Tales - My Colleague's 'Owambe'

This collection is actually a blast from the past. I took the pictures way back in 2009 during the burial ceremony of one of my then office colleagues. The after party was your typical owambe and had all the makings I analyzed in an earlier post

Almost all the characters in this collection are from my workplace. I initially wanted to do this as an 'Anatomy of an Owambe party 2' but I thought it should stand alone since it falls in the category of my photo tales series. After I took these shots, I pasted them on the office notice board as you see them and it made people laugh. I guess this is where I initially got the idea of the Photo Tales.

Oh...and the characters in this collection are actual characters and actual names.
Trust me to be that mischievious...lol.

Be sure to click to see a larger version in case you can't read the words.

This was proof that Trannies exist in Nigeria too.

Anatomy of an 'Owambe' Party

If you ever happen to visit the southern parts of Nigeria and Lagos from Fridays through the weekends, you are bound to come across this interesting phenomenon popularly known as the ‘Owambe party’.
According to a renown journalist, so common was the ‘Owambe’ among the Yoruba that other Nigerians who seemed to be more restrained soon began to organize owambe parties too: the oil boom had made easy money possible, and for years, Nigerians really lived it up. One contemporary English dictionary, describes the Yoruba  as “the fun-loving people of West Africa!”

‘Owambes’ (derived from a Yoruba word that means “we have it, so we can flaunt it”) usually happen during significant celebrative ceremonies such as weddings, society birthday bashes, burials, anniversary celebrations and sometimes at naming ceremonies. They are usually colorful and take place most times either in event halls or just on a field with erected canopies all over the place. There’s the presence of a band which is not just there to entertain but to also rub the egos of the bigwigs in attendance by singing their praises with the hope of getting sprayed with cash. And of course, the spraying of cash is a well known thing to occur at these events.

Spraying of cash is an essential element of an 'owambe' party
Then you’ll also notice how dress codes pervade these occasions; these are the notoriously known as the ‘Aso Ebi’ where you are required to be dressed to ‘feel among’. It’s always a must for family members of the celebrants.  Everybody is uniformed for the occasion in these outfits that in a lot of cases may have been sold at ridiculously high prices by individuals who seize the opportunity to make some extra cash. Meanwhile some of those who are obligated to buy and can’t readily afford sometimes stupidly go to the length of borrowing money to purchase the material.

Aso Ebi 'Victims'
I usually don’t like attending ‘Owambes’ but unfortunately I’m married to a woman who LOVES them. I don’t know whether it has to do with her being an ‘Ijebu’ woman, ‘cause I heard Ijebu people love to party.

Most of the time I spend at any Owmabe, I just sit watching and observing the people and the events going on. And a lot of funny and amusing stuff does happen. In my lifetime experience of being forced to attend these parties, I’ve been able to diagnose the elements of individuals that make up an Owambe party.

The Celebrants
As the name implies, these individuals are the sole reason for the whole jig. Sometimes, they are so busy making it happen or worrying about the whole party going just right. Sometimes they are happy mostly because they’ve made a successful impact with the event. In other cases they are not because they are still brooding over the amount of funds the party has siphoned out of their pockets (e.g. the groom who had to spend a fortune on his wedding).

The Party animals
These are the ones that sieze the opportunity of an owambe to get drunk and misbehave. The ‘misbehaving’ in this case would be seen as having fun and being jolly by some people but seriously, this bunch can be annoying. They usually sit together and have bottles of beer lined up for the moment. They are loud and obnoxious (tongue let loose by the alcohol) and some of them may smoke and don’t give a damn if the fumes pisses you off.

 The Scavengers
These individuals are usually the guests that come to the party accompanied by a polythene bag. They have a mission to go home with take-aways. I’m not talking about the take-away that is packed for guests by the organizers, I’m talking about the take-away that is obtained through the several helpings of the food being served for the occasion. These individuals sieze the opportunity to collect food from as many servers as they can and empty them into the bag which they intend to take home. I don’t blame them for doing this as most of them engage in the act due to poverty.

The Fashionistas

Sisterhood of the Fashionistas!
These individuals have one thing on their mind - to show off the designs of their ‘Aso Ebi’. You see them doing deliberate catwalk struts as they go from table to table showing off their stuff. They’ve gone through the painstaking wahala of making sure their dress has been designed to kill. Sometimes the designs are good and sometimes they are disastrous.

The Loaded Ones

Pepper dey rest and fly all over the place!

While the fashionistas show off with their outfits, these individuals show off with money. Yes, these are the people who have come to ‘spoil ground’ with raw cash. You see them spraying crisp naira notes or foreign currency. Of course you can’t be in this group if you’re not ‘loaded’. They are usually the stars of any event since the abundance of money is known to notoriously gather you respect anytime, any day. These are the main targets of the performing band who are usually ambitious to get their own share before the event wraps up.

The Gate Crashers
These are the uninvited guests who show up to celebrate with you, not because they like you or care, but mostly because they are rooting for the food being served. Nobody knows them from Adam, yet they party along as if they are family members. They found out somehow about the party and ‘joined chorus’. While their preoccupation is just with eating as much food as they can get, some of them switch to scavenger mode and hustle for take-aways as well.

The Sexy Marauders

Spot the Sexy marauder in this famous photo

Anybody who is dressed in revealing outfit falls into this category. Sometimes the Fashionistas fall into it as well. These are individuals who feel their own version of the ‘Aso Ebi’ must reveal lots of cleavage or have their big bosoms popping out scandalously out of the seams. And if it’s not cleavage, it’s the extreme shortness of a gown or skirt revealing gratuitous thighs. Just sitting down alone may even showcase what’s underneath the dress if the legs are not properly crossed. Men are sexually traumatized by these marauding spectacles.

The Beggars

Every 'Owambe' is their lucky day!

They are actually who they are – street beggars who seize the opportunity of a party to beg for money, food and anything. It’s like a windfall for them. They usually end up eating remnants of the food left behind by guests.

The thieves
Just as their name implies, their mission is simple – to steal anything they can get their hands on. These individuals may not be easily defined. They are amongst the guests and even the uninvited. They could be anybody from any of the afore mentioned categories. A thief is usually faceless until he or she gets caught so they are not defined. Only their act is.
